Does anyone know if the Q will be having a TSV on a laptop before Christmas? I need to purchase one for my daughter and was hoping to get a good deal.

First question. Is your daughter in college or about to go to college? If yes, check what deals might be avaliable through her school. A lot of schools team up with one or more computer manufacturers for student discounts.
If not, why not go to the website of computer manufacturers and see what they have available. Or go to a "big box store" and see what they have available. You'll be sure you're getting fresh products (especially when ordering through the websites) with the latest operating systems and not loaded with software that your daughter most likely won't need.
In addition, If you are thinking of some kind of extended techical support plan, I prefer extended technical support offered by the manufacturers (e.g. Apple Care). I prefer to deal with people who specialize in my computer and have been trained by the manufacturer to concentrate on their stuff.
Just some thoughts.

ITA about checking manufacturers' websites and the big retailers. You just don't get your money's worth at shopping networks for this type of thing. You get older technology, a bunch of bloat that has virtually no value yet they put a huge dollar value on it, to make people think they are getting a bunch of stuff for 'free'.
I use only laptops and I've purchased some of them from manufacturer's websites, some from Best Buy, and some from Amazon.
My only cautionary tale comes from the Best Buy purchases. Sometimes they take these computers and add on a bunch of proprietary stuff (qrap, if you will) that sometimes gets in the way of operating and updates. I had one that wouldn't allow some big Windows updates because of some Best Buy stuff that I was unable to uninstall. When I couldn't get a Service Pack update and then, subsequently, some other important updates I had to shelve the computer.
The brands I use are Toshiba, Lenovo, and Sony. It seems like maybe Sony is out of the laptop business now, which is too bad. I have one VAIO and it's a great computer.
I used to buy Dell products until they burned me and that was it for me. I tend to divorce myself from brands that skrew me over, pretty quickly. Not a fan of HP either but the only HP computer I had was early on (a desktop) and my worst problem with HP was that it didn't play well with other brands. Consequently I had to have an HP brand printer, and other peripherals for the computer to work well with them. That was a long time ago, however, so it might not be so bad now. But, again, once I'm turned off by a brand/retailer/etc, I'm gonesville. ![]()

One thing I've learned over the years about brands and our opinions of them is that many times, for every person who says they hate a brand, have had bad luck with it, etc., there is another person who speaks glowingly of the brand - and vice versa. Even tech support and IT change their minds and flip-flop in a 4-5 year period. Five years ago, the brand that people couldn't get enough of is now designated as shoddy and substandard by the same people/websites who raved about it 5 years ago. And brands that were good, then bad, are now good again. All you can do is shop for specs.

I was going to post the same thing. While I don't doubt the people posting had their problems, I've purchased the same brands and from the same stores with no problems. If you want opinions of a particular computer, that's OK. But to condem an entire brand because one person had a lemon is not smart.
As posted, you need to look at each computer's specs. I also look at a notebook's vents. Vents on the bottom spells trouble. One of the best I've owned was a HP XP notebook. It's vents were on the side in the corner. That computer lasted 7 years of daily use before it finally died.
