Interesting thread because we just received correspondence from our landline company about "upgrading" to fiberoptic connection. Almost everything had to do with internet access. It read like an offer, complete with fine print at the bottom detailing "early cancellation fees," etc. I also noticed with respect to landlines, we'd need a battery backup using 12 D batteries for a fiberoptic landline connection.

I called the company, just to make sure, and was told it's not mandatory. That's good because a battery backup wouldn't be happening here. The power goes out enough in this area to appreciate our current reliable landline connection which never goes out--no backup needed.

Should they ever discontinue our current mode of service, we'll simply get rid of the landline altogether.

I haven't read all the comments but how is this possible? There are people out there who don't have cell phones and they still need to reach police and fire departments. Our cell service in the house stinks. I still use the landline if I'm making a local call and I have my kids and siblings call the landline if I'm home and they want me.

I have a VOIP phone. It's just like an old landline phone only it's connected to my internet router instead of the old copper wire system on a pole outside.

My VOIP service provider had me enable 911 emergency services by having me provide my physical address associated with my VOIP phone number. Otherwise if you call 911 then emergency services won't know where to go and all they see is a phone number.

What happens when there is no power to internet service? Happened during and after hurricane here 4 yrs ago. Had electric service in 24 hrs but internet service was out for another 36 hours. I had lanline at the time and it wotkrd throughout the storm and afyer with no issues. Was thankful I had not given up my landine. My friends in neighborhoood 2 miles away were without internet service for over a week. They had electricity connected within 36 hors but no phone since internet provider ATT was down at their main site.

Doesn't matter if your provider of internet service is wiyhout power. Has happened here after hurricane. I have whole house generater but if Provider is down forget internet and VOIP until they are back up. ATT electric generators went out and were out for several days.

Unfortunately bad things do happen to ISPs during storms and other disasters. I haven't had the experience of going through that yet, tg. Cell towers often go out, too, so there's that. Time to just hunker down and wait for the power to come back on soon hopefully. All we can do is prepare for the worst and don't rely on 'them'. Many people do and that's a problem.

With a license and a permit, a person can have a Ham radio to keep in contact with the rest of the world during a disaster. But really who does that??
