Any input welcomed! My husband finally wants a smartphone . I think best to get a tracfone for him. He is retired and wants to use the phone for GPS need and the ability to have Internet access when he is out and about. He is used to a Kindle Fire.he is VERY hard on his stuff. He needs something basic to start with that is current and reliable. Suggestions? WERE THERE ANY RECENT SPECIALS OR UPCOMING SPECIALS UPCOMING?

I bought the LG tracfone when it was a special on QVC.   In fact, my husband also ordered one because it was so easy to learn.   This is our first smartphone.   It is an android, has lots of free apps and is very easy to navigate.  Love the fact that it is a non-contract phone,  talk/text/data is tripled anytime it is added.   It's really a great way to try a smart phone.

Have had 9 Tracfones, all bought from hsn. Present 1 and prior one were/are Samsung Centura. I seldom use it but it does have the feature's you mention such as GPS. Sounds like your husband might want one with better specs than mine.

Mine has old Android System and only 4g of internal memory and an older duel core processor.  Good enough for my use, but I think your husband might be better with a cell with better specs.

You might check here and hsn by searching: "Tracfone" and looking under the "specification" tab. Maybe 8g internal memory/Android 4.4 (Kit Kat) operating system and maybe even a Quad Core Processor.

Were I to use a cell for the same purpose as your husband? I would not settle for specs less than I listed in my paragraph above this one.

I bought the Samsung tracphone when it was on sale earlier this year.  It's very easy to use and it's perfect for my needs.  However, how do I know if I need to add minutes?  Does it tell me?

With my Samsung Centura there is an App( icon) on the Home Page called "MY ACCOUNT" that I open and it gives this information:

Expiration date/minutes/texts and Data left. That should tell you all you need to know. If you don't have that App? Try going to the Tracfone website and download it onto your phone. It should be a Free App.

I currently have an LG smartphone from Tracfone and love it.  I am a lite cell phone user so the triple minutes are all I ever need.  When they run out, it is cheaper to buy a new phone than buy the minute package that comes with a new one.  For what your husband is wanting to do with a smart phone, a pay as you go plan may not be the best thing for him.  Internet, when not on wifi and GPS really deplete the data part of the plan quickly.  He would be buying extra time, text and data constantly.  It would be cheaper for him to buy a dedicated GPS than to keep refilling his phone.
