Re: Knowing if the recipient of your e-mail has read it.

Focksie, I looked up

in a search engine to see if I could find some helpful articles & reviews for you, so you could feel better informed & know what you're getting. Here are a couple links I found:

How To Know When My Emails Are Read:

http://techpp.com/2013/02/18/email-tracking/

If you don’t mind registering yourself, you can use services like http://www.whoreadme.com/ and http://www.getnotify.com/. Both the services provide details like the duration for which the mail was read, the IP address and the browser that was used. All you need to do is add the suffix “.whoreadme.com” or “.getnotify.com” to the email address. Both services send read receipts with details like how long the mail was read, IP address and browser.

---------------------------

I hope some of that is useful for you. I've worked with those types before, and usually nepotism is involved, which makes your own job a true challenge to get done when they just coast through every work-day and leave piles of unfinished business in their wake for the rest of us to pick up. Good luck!

Just curious, I have a different need. AOL used to have an UNSEND feature, just in case you made a mistake or had second regrets. That is all gone.

Do any of the mail programs have this feature. I really don't want more than one mail provider if I can help it. I am on Comcast but am a creature of habit and have kept my aol address to be my primary.

I REALLY miss that feature too!! I don't know whether everyone who uses AOL knows this but if you are emailing somebody who is also on AOL -- AOL has the exact feature that the OP is looking for. You can check the status and a know whether your email was received -- read -- not read -- or deleted without being read.

I was going to post the same thing. I had AOL for years(first dial-up then bring your own cable connection) and you could check the status of your sent e-mail as long as it was to another AOL address.

I've received e-mail where the sender sent a receipt request, I had to check a box and it would provide a receipt or notify the sender the mail was opened. I checked it because it had to do with my Mother's estate. I doubt that would do any good when you have someone who is ignoring you.

SerenityNowMyndi, thank you for the link. That site covers what I've already researched on my own and talks about the downloads I listed in my OP. I just wanted to know if anyone has actually signed up for any of these and used them successfully. Mostly I'm concerned about them being "legit" and also truly free.

Back when I had dial-up (MSN?) I could tell if my emails were opened. Personally, I think that is a good feature to have.

The business version of Outlook has a message recall feature, but the recipient has the option to acknowledge that the message can be recalled.

NYC Susan ... if you're not available to answer the phone, how are you available to read the emails? {#emotions_dlg.confused1}

I can relate to NYC Susan's situation. In my previous workplace we couldn't have any distractions, not even a vibrating phone. If a person can't have distractions or just doesn't want to be bothered during the work day, all they have to do is check their emails at the end of the day.

If someone reads your message from a preview pane, there won't be a receipt because they didn't actually open it.

So, focksie, who are you stalking? {#emotions_dlg.laugh}

{#emotions_dlg.laugh} Not stalking ennui, but I do need to verify that someone receives my instructions. I just read that businesses use this all the time.

Yes, businesses use it, but it's a lot easier just to pick up the phone and ask.

In some cases, it's best to have written proof that an email has been received. Just to avoid problems re miscommunication later on. And of course people may say they haven't read it when in fact they have.

I work in television, and many of us are rarely sitting near a phone or free to answer calls when they come in. So in my experience, it's not always easier to just pick up the phone and ask. My work email does have a feature that lets us know if emails have been received and opened, along with the date and time. The assumption is that anyone who opens a work-related email has read it. (It would be irresponsible otherwise.)

I'm curious. You work in TV and you don't have a cell phone or IPad in your hand? Or at least in your bag, pocket, briefcase? I don't know anyone who needs to be "sitting near a phone" anymore in order to receive a call except a very elderly person who isn't into tecnology. And you can have your cell on vibrate and text back an answer to anyone so I don't get your post. {#emotions_dlg.confused1}

I don't always have a cell phone in my hand at work. And when we're on set, all phones are turned off. And in other situations too. Having multiple phones on vibrate can wreak havoc on a television set. It's also disruptive to have phones interrupt during other things that we do.

Of course we have cell phones. But emailing is far more efficient than calling because we're not always free to answer calls or listen to voicemail messages. It's far more efficient to read emails (and sometimes texts) when we can, and respond quickly that way.

I've found that in life - not just at work - emailing can be much easier and less time-consuming than phone calls. In a business environment, that's often preferable.

My point was that it's not always "easier just to pick up the phone and ask".

Yes, AOL does let you know if your email has been received, deleted, and also unread, read, or ignored.

However, it's flawed. A friend and I both have AOL accounts (in addition to gmails and others), and we've noticed that emails will show as "ignored" when in fact we have read them and responded - and "read" when we haven't yet opened them. I think it used to be much more reliable.

And I remember "unsend"! I actually looked for it a couple of days ago after I sent an email and forgot to add something. I hadn't used that feature in years, so I have no idea how long ago they got rid of it.
