Ah you made me feel better geezerette! Thanks! And thanks to Lynnj and everyone else! I think after dinner I'm going to pour myself a stiff drink and go for it! That would be coffee black, no cream.

I removed Java from my Windows 7 computer and was never prompted by any website that I needed to install it for that website to function properly. The computer I'm currently using - Windows 8.1 didn't even have Java on it and I have no intention of ever installing it.

Same here on the Windows 7. When the big scare was on (was it a year or so ago, or more?) I uninstalled my Java and have not yet encountered any need for it.

Success! I felt kind of foolish for working myself up into such a state over something that wasn't such a big deal to do after all. But I wouldn't have done it if not for you guys guiding me along on how to do it and reassuring me that all would be well. I thought for sure I'd screw something up and the computer would be kaput! Thanks Again. :-)

Oh and by the way, I'm still using a flip phone, yep! That's how far I HAVEN'T come along!

Great, glad you got it done and now see how easy it is. But, because you now see how easy it is, please...DO NOT JUST CLICK ON JUST ANYTHING THAT POPS UP. If you see a pop up asking you to upgrade or install something, go to the website of the company asking you to do that to see if this is a real request. If all else, come here and ask.

The internet is fun and easy, but certainly not safe. Don't believe everything you see and read as true. You computer won't stop working if you wait a few days to do some research before clicking on something it is asking you to do.

Pat yourself on your back for learning about what was being asked for on this before you clicked on it, asking about how to do it, and for doing it on your own. Job well done!

I don't have Java installed on any of my computers and it's not needed. With all of the security problems, unless you have a specific program that needs it, uninstall Java.

Our school computers need Java specifically to run a program for on-line testing... Added this info in case someone needs it.

I uninstalled it over a year ago, too. They're so vulnerable to security problems and they're not known to let the public know about dangers until after the fact (and even then, sometimes there's no full disclosure).

Nevertheless, as others mentioned, there are some things that do require Java.

Sidebar: I want to emphasize what Lynnj said -- Java and JavaScript are not the same. Most people can do everything they want/need with Java disabled, but that's not true of JavaScript.
