There are different JAVA things related to your computer. For example Java script does things that run your computer. Then there is Java software, which is different from Java script, that some games use. So it could be confusing when researching if you aren't sure exactly which Java thing your are researching. Most important - if you remove it, make sure you remove the correct Java thing. If the wrong one, your computer won't work. It sounds like the thing asking you to update is the software connected to games...I think it's called Sun Java? Do you play games? Maybe on Facebook, or another online site?

Caffeina Thank You. And no doubt this is a dumb question but.....I looked at that Java site and where it says Version 8 Update 25 then Free Java Download, I just click on that and it does it? Are any other prompts or questions going to come up? And same questions if I opt to click on the permission on the notification to do it? And how do I know when it's done?

I just came back to edit this post. I just noticed that little orange notification thingy isn't on the bottom of my screen anymore, I suspect it'll be back though sooner or later.

When you click on it, the file will download to where ever you normally choose to send those types of downloads to. Then you click on the downloaded file and the installation will begin. You'll be asked (see pic) if you want Ask as your default search, and to make Ask your home page. If you don't want them, uncheck the boxes and click Next.

The little coffee cup icon will stop popping up after you've updated. It doesn't have to be present unless yu want to download by clicking on it.

Yes, this Java is safe to update. And great that your doing it for the site directly, not the pop up. This type is something that some games might need, or other things that might use heavy graphics.

Well I do have McAfee Security Center which I notice sometimes is running scans. One of my fears is if I click on permission to update this java thing then I don't know what happens next, does it do it on it's own, will it ask me any questions or to pick options or what the heck, in which case I might start crying, ahaaha. Another reason it scares me is because I was reading the thread about the dangers in the Flash update thing being dangerous and I had just given the okay last week for that one to update so I went into a tizzy over having done that but so far I don't seem to be having any problems from doing it. I so much enjoy having the computer but on the other hand I hate having it because my knowledge is so limited and I get scared I'm going to screw something up. My husband got this computer a few years back and got it all set up and was knowledgeable about these things on it but unfortunately he's passed away so here I am enjoying the limited amount of things I know how to do but fearful of making a dreadful mistake.

If you have questions about stuff, just ask. There is a great group of people here posting and many with a ton of computer knowledge. As you see from today, someone will come along and help answer your question...or give you direction to find out more.

I have absolutely taken notice of how kind and generous people are here in helping others which is what prompted me to ask for advice on what to do. Oddly enough the little orange square w/the cup of coffee notification which was tormenting me for days before I asked has disappeared from the bottom of my screen, and more oddly it seems to have disappeared while I was going over again all your answers and getting ready to take the plunge on the java site. So for now I'm holding off till it comes back to torment me at which point I'm going to go to the website again and follow the advice I was so kindly given as to how to do it. It was the part that asked permission to make changes to my hard drive (I think that was how it was worded) that kind of freaked me out. Again my sincere thanks to all who offered your wisdom!

circles, if you're reading this, what did you wind up doing?

shaggygirl, Please install updates to Java if you're going to keep it enabled. Java has been and is highly vulnerable to major security problems and it's critical for everyone to either choose to disable it or to install updates when they're released.

Okay, one last stupid question, Caffeina said it will send the file to wherever I normally choose to send those types of downloads to. Am I going have to choose a place? Or it automatically goes to wherever it is now? I have no clue where it already is! Duh!

shaggygirl, I just wanted to let you know that you are not the only one who, in your words, "doesn't know squat" about this stuff. Me, too. So I won't try to answer your last question, since I may be wrong.

But the folks on this forum are always happy to help with what some of us still regard as "stupid" questions. You never know who else you may be helping when you ask something you think everybody else knows but you. You might be helping somebody like, well, ME!!{#emotions_dlg.laugh}

Hang in there, you can do it!{#emotions_dlg.thumbup}

it will automatically select a folder/file/place to download to. Some people, maybe those with more computer experience, like to always select the same place to download things to on their computer. When you do a download, you usually get a thing that pops up during the process that says something to the effect - The download will be stored here, then will list the folder name and file name. That can manually be changed, and after you change it, then you hit okay to continue. If you don't want to change the place, then just hit okay and the process will continue.

Its also good to know the name of what folder it is storing to, because if you ever want to delete it, you find that folder and file at the place it is stored and delete it.

Its no big deal to just hit okay, and let it store on the computer wherever it suggested to be stored. Its usually picking a place where other things that are like this, or other downloaded things you did are already stored. Typically people who select there own place to store it are the type of people who like to keep things clean (clean house) and know where everything is.

In the end, for this, I think you will be fine just letting it select a place manually and hitting okay to go to next part in the download/update process.
