Is It Safe To Apply For A Credit Card On Line?

I know this is slightly off topic but I wanted it to be somewhere that gets a lot of traffic. I would like to get a Nordstrom credit card and don't live near one. I order many things at their website. I'm kind of leery of giving out so much information on line , afraid of identity theft. My question is has anyone ever done this and do you think it's safe?TIA
