Iphone 3G 'echo' issue

There is an 'echo' when I am speaking to someone on my iphone. I can hear myself in a loud 'echo' while I'm talking, and the other party says it sounds like a wind tunnel. I am stuck in a 2 year contract. What can I do? I really love the iphone, but it is too aggravating to try to have a normal phone conversation.

I have tried to lower the volume, it seemed to help a little bit, but now the 'echo' is back.
