Ipad vs Ipad 2 ?s

I am apologing in advance for my ignorance as I am technology challenged. I am hoping you would be kind enough to answer my questions.

I just bought an Ipad for my son's graduation present. When I got home I realized the box says Ipad - not Ipad 2. Could you tell me if the Ipad 2 says Ipad 2 on the box? If not, how do you know which version you have?

Also, I didn't realize there were so many choices. My son will primarily be using this to play games, view you-tube and possibly some school work (I can hope anyway). From what I gathered I don't need the 3G service for any of this. Am I right? Did I make the right choice? TIA. I really would appreciate your feedback.
