Apple releases iOS 9.3.5 to fix 3 zero-day vulnerabilities
8/25/2016, 1:21 PM
"Just a few weeks after posting iOS 9.3.4 to fix a jailbreaking-related bug, Apple has released iOS 9.3.5 to all supported iPhones and iPads.
The update provides an "important security update" and comes just a few weeks before the expected release of iOS 10, which is currently pretty far along in the developer/public beta process.
Update: Apple also tells us that these bugs were fixed in the latest versions of the iOS 10 public and developer betas, which were released last week.
Apple's security release notes say that three bugs have been fixed, two in the iOS kernel and one in WebKit.
The bugs were discovered by Citizen Lab and Lookout, the latter of which posted more information in a blog post.
Lookout collectively calls the three zero-day vulnerabilities "Trident,"
and says that
they could allow an victim's personal data to be accessed
after opening a link sent in a text message.
Trident infects a user's phone "invisibly and silently, such that victims do not know they’ve been compromised."
We'll have more information about the vulnerability in a forthcoming article.
The update is available now for everything that runs iOS 9: the iPhone 4S and newer; iPad 2 and newer; all iPad Minis and iPad Pros; and the fifth- and sixth-generation iPod Touches."

Always be sure to create a backup of your device before updating software. To update wirelessly, launch the Settings app, then tap General > Software Update. You also can update within iTunes with your device connected to your computer.

Thanks for the update @dooBdoo ☺️
Ever since the last iOS update, my iPhone 5 has been dropping WiFi. I used to not have any problems at all with WiFi and could even walk to the mailbox or far back yard and still be on WiFi. Now I can still do all that on my iPad, but my phone drops WiFi even when I'm sitting five feet from the router. Same problems at restaurants and stores where I used to have no issues. Resetting the network settings didn't help, so I'm hoping this iOS update or the next one (10) will resolve my WiFi issues.

You're welcome, @wildcat fan! That WiFi problem sounds exasperating. I have an AT&T iPhone 5, always updated to the current iOS, and no problems with dropping either the WiFi or cellular connection. However, I know this has been a reported problem over time and I'm not sure of the cause. Since you've tried the network settings reset, the only other things I know of that sometimes help are to turn on Airplane Mode and then do a hard reboot of the device (hold power and home buttons down simultaneously until you see the Apple logo and phone will reboot), then turn Airplane Mode off. Also, you might have some corrupted data on the phone which sometimes is removed if you do a backup/sync. Lastly, you always have the option of doing a full backup, then reset/erase the iPhone, then restore from the backup to fix a myriad of glitches.

I will try those if the iOS update doesn't help. Thanks again!

Thanks for this update. I use an IPad and appreciate this heads up. I don't understand the technical aspects of the security liabilities, so your warning is very helpful. MY husband is a retired computer professional. I hate to ask him technical questions since he gives me answers that are way too technical. I have a very deep understanding of science and worked in the field. But, Hubby,s explanations are so frustrating. Thank goodness for the QVC Boards. You folks here are the best at explaining almost anything.
