@LTT1 That seems like another good way to do it - thanks!

Thank you @ChynnaBlue, that sounds like something for me to do moving forward - more of a good combo solution.

Lost most photos from my phone but they all still appear to be on my iPad, which is what I wanted. I haven't lost any photos, and they don't all need to be on my phone. So a workable answer seems to be don't enable stream or iCloud for your photos on your phone. I presume that from now on, photos taken on my phone are all that will show up there. Minor loss, but okay by me.
I'm glad I read the posts before replying because I was going to tell you to turn off Photo Stream on your phone. I agree with the photo sharing with your Apple devices. I don't want my photos everywhere. I have the opposite problem of you. I use my iMac for almost everything, have a TB of storage and want it to be my main device. I ran out of room on my iPad because of photos and the category "other". Once I did a reset and turned off Photo Steam, the problem was solved.

@Moonchilde@glb613@ChynnaBlue@LTT1@I am still oxox thanks for this discussion. My phone is getting crowded too. Will save for future reference. LM

This is a great thread! I don't have tons of photos/images, and I do use my iMac to move them all from my iPad or iPhone and then delete them on those mobile devices. But I have played around with the options from time to time and agree that Apple has made the process confusing and mistake-prone. I confess I've occasionally used the old-school system of emailing some images from my mobile device to myself -- that way if I fat-finger my way into completely removing something I wanted to keep, I can retrieve it from email messages. It's so odd... one of the things I always appreciated about Apple was the ease of use (and ease of helping others when they had questions). Over time, iTunes and Photos have become strangely complicated puzzles and that reflects badly on the company, in my opinion.

I agree. I prefer iPhotos because I have it set up with folders to keep my pictures organized. When Photos was introduced, it took over and always opening when I didn't want it. I finally figured how to turn off it automatically opening and being the default photo program and I'm back to being a happy customer.
iTunes is the other program that drives me to distraction. I have multiple devices and computers and trying to get it to do what I want is difficult at times. I don't store any pictures on my iPad and very few on my iPhone. I sync/backup with my iMac and every time I did a backup, photos were everywhere. I did figure out how to stop it thank goodness.
I can see having your mail, contacts and calendar sync with all devices. The rest, no. I don't need or want all of my photos, music and movies on everything I own.
