Mine became so slow after an OS upgrade... and Apple confirmed it. Technology had out-grown my phone and there is nothing they can do about it. (They can't fix the phone or revert to the previous OS)... sorry, that IS down-side for sure. I DID use this fact for "bargaining power" when purchasing an "air." I told them the sale was not happening unless they put on the contract that I would receive a brand new iPad if the screen on mine ever cracked.

I had a feeling that Apple planned this to sell more phones. Did you do the newest update, yet?

I have a low end 4S and I called Apple when I got the update message. The C/S person and I agreed, it would not be in my best interest to install the update. In my case, I'd have to delete just about everything and start all over. My 4S is currently serving me very well and I have no desire to change things. I'll upgrade some time (year?!) down the road, but for now, my 4S is just fine, for me!

Its the update for sure. I have iPhone 5 and since the update everything freezes. Its awful. The keyboard freezes along with web pages. It just won't move and I have to just shut it off or do a reboot. And its sooo slow. Should have never done the software update, but never had this kind of problem before. On the flip side. I also updated my iPad air and its fine.

You could try a clean install and see if that helps. If it doesn't, I would contact Apple. If you have an Apple store near by, make an appointment with a Genius and go in for help.
Here's a video on performing a clean install. He first covers a wireless install, which you do not want to do, so go ahead to the 1:43 mark for the clean install. Make sure you do the backup first!

Mindy D... I have not done ANY updates to iPhone or iPad at all ...NONE. Like you, I'm afraid that the updates are done to sell more. After the bad experience and hearing about other newer updated and problems, I'm waiting, waiting...

The market is keenly competitive and all companies want to sell new products. However, I can't see ascribing nefarious intent and presuming Apple purposefully releases software harmful to older devices. The negative publicity surrounding new updates would easily outweigh, or at least neutralize, any new sales for any company. I don't see that as being logical. More likely, it's the usual problem of a constant demand for new technology and the complexity of writing code that works for every device in use.
For those who want to report problems or tell Apple how they feel:

I would add: some problems can be resolved by a few simple things.
Look at storage (in Settings, General-->Usage-->Manage Storage, and Privacy-->Diagnostics & Usage-->Diagnostics & Usage Data), close the apps running in the background, clear cookies and website data, do a hard reset, and/or try a complete backup/sync of the device to iTunes. I periodically connect to iTunes on my iMac, do a full backup, erase the device completely, and then do a restore. However, no one should do this unless they're completely comfortable with the process -- you always can go to an Apple store or call Apple's 800 number for guidance.
eta: If there's a problem associated solely with using the internet, such as the issues described in the original post, be sure to check your internet connection. There have been a few reports that it's helpful to reboot your WiFi router and also reset your Network Settings.
