IPads at School

I noticed on many electronics shows lately, that they state that students are required to bring an Ipad. I work at a school and know many bring one or one is provided by the teachers, but know of no schools that students have to have one. This would be hard to enforce. Also many are reluctant to bring one from home as they get stolen. Any comments on this?
