That said, as Cha1k mentions above, the new iPads come with Pages (Mac version of word) and Numbers (Mac version of excel) for free. Personally, I would suggest replacing your computer with a Mac computer if you plan on using word excel type of applications often. New Mac computers also come with pages and numbers, but you could also purchase office for Mac software for your Mac computer. Then you would have full version of word and excel accessible from Mac. I use excel/numbers often for my job, and couldn't imagine doing many of the things I do in those programs using my iPad. I use my iPad to view some of those documents created on the computer, and make minor changes if needed. Mac computers don't generally get viruses, and no virus protection software is needed.
There is only one problem: a lot of places don't not use IOS platforms. We don't all want Macs of any kind. Apple may be the gold standard, but Microsoft dominates. What people want to be able to do is work with Microsoft on their Apple not Apple's version of it. That is a major flaw of tablets, I don't care which operating system you would use.

We just purchased the Surface for my daughter. That is amazing. We have a house full of Apple products, but she really needed something that is completely compatible for school.

I use Pages and Numbers (mac apps) on my iPad. I don't make very large documents so these meet my needs - don't know if that would effect iPad use. Documents are saved on the iCloud.
I do happen to have a Mac computer and the iPad and Mac sync. So I can open documents on either platform.
I actually prefer the iPad and would be happy to use just the iPad for my word and number processing.

This way, anyone who uses any platform can use them. Doesn't matter if you have a Mac or a PC. It also has an option to save as a Mac file, but then only those who have numbers and pages can open them.On 1/20/2014 Lynnj said: An iPad, or any tablet for that matter, isn't a replacement for a computer.
