IE 7 vs IE9

If I am currently (successfully) using IE7, is it necessary (advisable?) to upgrade to IE9? Is such a download difficult? What problems might I anticipate if I do the upgrade? (Sorry, I'm not very computer literate). Thanks for any help/advice. (Oh, I have a Dell desktop using Windows XP).
