Re: I have internet explorer.........

Please forgive this very stupid question, but if I am on AOL(because I am reading my emails) and then go to search for something, am I using IE????? I have other search engines on my desktop but often go to the Internet while I am reading emails on AOL. So in doing so, what exactly is my search engine/browser???? TIA

I have the Windows 8 operating system. So I am inquiring about being on AOL and reading my emails (entered through the AOL icon) and then deciding (while on AOL) to use the internet OR to read an email that has a link to something. Hope that makes sense.

So many old AOL users do this. I couldn't get either my sister or a friend of mine to stop going into AOL and using it as their pathway to IE and everything else. I still have an AOL address which I use for Internet and other online stuff, not my private email for which I use Outlook/Comcast.

You don't need to use AOL for anything other than reading your mail. It does a very poor job of running your computer.

What browser opens? Have you downloaded and installed any browser since having your computer? All Windows computers come with IE. If you want something different, you need to download and install it.

Thanks to all for sharing this info. But could someone please help get me started to change to Chrome? Where do I get started? Do I need to remove IE or just add Chrome? TIA

You can't uninstall IE because it's part of the operating system. You simply don't use it if you don't want. If you want a different browser, I use Firefox, go to Google and type in the name. Be sure to look at the address and only download from a safe site. Here are the sites for Chrome and Firefox.

Chrome

Firefox

Question:

I use Explorer but haven't since the news, so I am in Chrome which I already had. I just downloaded Firefox so I would have options. But when Firefox asked me if I want my Explorer passwords, etc moved to Firefox, I said yes. Will that just bring the explorer problem into Firefox now? I don't know how all this works.

I want to use Explorer when they get it fixed but in the meantime am I safe with Firefox. I need to order some stuff and I only have my passwords in Explorer and now Firefox. Am I safe from transferring my passwords?

Re: I have internet explorer.........

I just installed Chrome, but didn't put it as my default browser. I'm going to just use keep it as an option and of course use it for now. This might be a silly question, but I have AVG as my antivirus. I assume that runs the same on both browsers? I have the avg toolbar and search bar set up on internet explorer but it's not appearing on the chrome, assuming because I didn't set it as my default browser? Just wanted to make sure avg is still working while I'm in chrome? Also, can I have the avg search on chrome as well? If so, how would I set that up? Thanks so much!

That's a good question. I would like to know if my MS virus program will automatically work on all three of my browers now. I didn't change my default either.

GLB & Fitness-Thank you for your help. It was easier than I thought to change my browser from IE. I really appreciate the computer advice everyone here has to offer.

Microsoft has now released an out-of-band patch for the Internet Explorer vulnerability.
