I am still using windows 7 On my older HP computer

I do not notice anything different or not working.  Is it just going to stop working suddenly or what?

Re: I am still using windows 7 On my older HP computer

Hey, until my laptop just recently gave up the ghost, I was happy using Vista.

I guesss I'm of the - if it ain't broke, no need to fix it - mentality.

I still have Windows 7 on my Dell desktop and see no reason to upgrade to 10.  It works just fine.

@SeaMaiden, I still have Windows 7as well. Microsoft will eventually stop updating it. Google says it will no longer be serviced after January of 2020.  My HP is going on 6 years old.  I will use it a bit longer and go to Apple for my next computer.  Getting tired of all the windows issues.  HTH.  LM

Re: I am still using windows 7 On my older HP computer

@Lilysmom You might want to check out the Apple Support forums before you make the switch. You'll find lots and lots of people there having problems very similar to the problems Windows users have. Sad to say there is no perfect computer.

If you can believe Microsoft, Windows 10 will be their last operating system. All future changes will be through updates to Windows 10. They're transitioning from an operating system to a ecosystem type business model. I'm not sure I believe them, but that's what they're now saying. They seem to feel that Windows 10 is their "ultimate" OS and from now on out they won't waste the time/development costs on making a new OS and instead just add minor tweaks to Windows 10 as necesssary.

It's a smart, logical move on their part, but they've made a ton of money on OS upgrades in the past and I'm not sure they'll stick to this model. Though they did end up giving away millions of copies of Windows 10 so maybe they are serious about the change. We'll have to see. Suffice to say at this point and time there is no Windows 11 in the planning stages at Microsoft.

Creating an operating system is enormously complicated and time consuming. One of the recent Apple OS's has a reported 85 million lines of code in it. If you can settle on a single OS and then just tweak it as the need arises, it should save everyone lots of headaches and costs. Microsoft is trying that now with Windows 10 and if they succeed,  a big if, it'll benefit everyone. Apple is still going with the new OS every couple of years model, so we'll have to see which side ends up making the smartest move.

Re: I am still using windows 7 On my older HP computer

@gardenman, thank you for the information, all of it news to me.  Wouldn't it be great if Windows 10 was the last version?  My experience with them trying to force people to make the conversion really turned me off.  My HP IS 5+ as I mentioned above.  I blocked the Windows 10 update.  I would rather stay with Win 7 and, when ready, buy a computer with 10 as an OS if I were to do Windows again.

I priced the new Mac laptop and it is up there...$2645 Canadian taxes included without the dongles required for hookup.  Do you think it would last ten years?

I will ponder this more.  Everything else I own is apple.  I will watch for feedback on the new Windows computer.

Thanks for taking the time to give some input.  I learned something thanks to you.  LM

You really need to look at the devices you have.  I don't think the majority of people are going to need more than one adapter or as you like to call them, dongles.  You really only need one USB to Thunderbolt 3 connection.

I wouldn't count on any computer lasting ten years. It might, but about the most you can typically squeeze out of a computer is seven to eight years. By then the technology will have changed and the old hardware will be obsolete. My first computer, a first generation Pentium computer still worked up until about a year ago when I finally got tired of seeing it and turned it into my local Radio Shack. It was technically still working even then, but was so obsolete it was largely useless. (I kept it more for nostalgia than anything. Every now and then I'd fire it up and putter around with it, but it was largley useless.)

I've gotten cheap in my older years and I don't need a top of the line computer for 99% of what I do, so I'm now more looking at the refurbished computers. Sites like Newegg have decent refurbs, some with a full one year warranty, for as little as under $100. They typically have new or newer operating systems and are cheaper than I can upgarde an older computer.

There's a big business now in renting computers out to businesses and when the lease is done (often one to three years) those computers get returned. A one to three year old computer still has quite a bit of life left ahead of it and getting it for $100 or so, is a pretty good deal. Nearly impossible to beat as a matter of fact. Even if you have to replace it every two years, it's not a big deal at that price. If you can squeeze three or four years out of it, it's an even better deal.

The companies that rent out computers to businesses and schools find themselves swamped in returned computers when the leases expire. The next leasee wants a newer model, so the old ones get refurbed and sold for a very low price. It's very much a buyers market these days. If you don't have huge demands for a computer, the refurbs are the way to go. The prices are kind of ridiculous these days.

Re: I am still using windows 7 On my older HP computer

@gardenman, what a good idea.

I read more about the new MacBook Pro today.  The hard core Apple long time customers don't seem to like it.  It isn't the computer for me.  I think I should be getting the MacBook Air.  One of these days soon I will get myself into the Apple Store and have a look at them.  LM
