I Pad WIFI vs 4G ?

I'm not sure whether to get the IPad with WIFI or 4G. I'm not real knowledgeable about these things and I want to be sure to get the right thing for me. We have WIFI in our home anfd I have 4G coverage for my phone through Sprint. Someone told me I can use a "hotspot" on my phone for internet connection for the IPad. Help! I'm confused! I just want to be sure I can use my Ipad wherever and whenever I want.
