Helpful Macbook Pro Hints for new users

Has anyone upgraded to OS Maverick from Mountain Lion? I have a 6 month old new MacBook Pro retina and am still exploring it. Awesome screen and graphics. I have to get an external drive for MAC for back-up with the Time Machine. Any suggestions? I have a 16GB with a 512Gb hard drive. I want to buy a 2TB external drive so I don't have to update to a larger one in the future. There was a forum to help with new iPad users that helped us all. I want to upgrade my iPad 4 to the new iOS 7.0.4 but some of the reviews don't sound too good. Anyone have good luck with the upgrade? I keep my iPad backed-up. Thanks so much. Happy Thanksgiving.
