Re: Help with Smart TV options

[ Edited ]

@Kachina624  See my post above yours.  It's Walmart.

@glb613  I know I am in the minority.  I am just tired of my cost of living increasing because people (mainly men) can't buy a $25 Chromecast and just plug it in.  Instead they want the manufacturer to do it for them and charge an extra $250 for it.

The world has gone nuts.

Sorry but, I absolutely disagree with you.  I don't begrudge others from having what they want just because I don't want or need it.  I don't want a $25 Chromecast and have no intention of buying one.  The price of TVs is so low these days, you can get all the bells and whistles for a very reasonable price.

Agreed. I paid $399 for a 55" Smart TV (Amazon Fire version made by Element) last July (Prime Day 2017) and this year the Black Friday ads are full of them at or around that price point from the big name brands (Samsung in particular.) A few years back you piad a premium for Smart TV's that made no sense, but these days there's no real premium to pay to get a Smart TV and they're smarter than ever.

@glb613  "Reasonable" is a relative term.  A couple hundred dollars is a lot of money to me.  I have no problem with the higher end options being available of course.  That's where they make their money.    I just want the lower end to not be forgotten either.  I had no choice but to buy a "smart" tv and pay for the streaming feature I already have.

And it's not just tvs.  You can't even touch an economy car these days for less than $20,000 or a phone for less than another couple hundred and we haven't even started with the cable/satellite/streaming services and phone services you need to make any of those things work these days.

It all adds up and those of us without financial partners are feeling the squeeze!

That is not how you presented your point of view in yur earlier post.  Let me quote you:

"I know I am in the minority.  I am just tired of my cost of living increasing because people (mainly men) can't buy a $25 Chromecast and just plug it in.  Instead they want the manufacturer to do it for them and charge an extra $250 for it.

We haven't gone nuts .  We simple want all the "bells and whistles" and shouldn't be criticized for it.  I'm sure if you look long and hard enough, you can find a TV that fits your needs and budget.  There is no way I want my options to be limited because of your financial situation.

@Laura14.   I have no idea what a Chromecast is but assume its not the latest thing.  I've bought 3 new TVs in the past 18mo and i'm pretty sure they don't have it.

I don't have cable and ditched my satellite.  I now use an interior antenna on which I get the network stations with local programming, PBS, shopping channels, about 50 more channels....all free.  I subscribe to Netflix and Sling.  Get as much TV as I can stand.  Reduced monthly bill about $100.  I also have Amazon Prime but mostly for the free shipping.

Re: Help with Smart TV options

@Kachina624  Chromecast is just Google's version of a streaming device.  When I asked a guy if "smart tv" just meant they had the streaming device built in, he said yes.

So you've already got it included.  Back in the day, you had to buy the little device and plug it into the back of the tv to stream Netflix and the like.

I would LOVE to be able to go old school and just get local channels over the air.  I think I am too far outside the city.  My brother in law literally lives 6 houses away and he's tried every incarnation known to man without success.

My new tv is arriving tomorrow so maybe it will pleasantly surprise me.  Right now I am subsisting on Youtube and CBS.com.  LOL   I have heard of Sling but have not really investigated what it is.

I am more of a tv listener than watcher.  I never really sit down and actually watch.  I usually have it on for noise and to go to sleep at night.

@Laura14,

Do you have a 'rabbit ears' antenna? If you don't, you'll need one to get over-the-air channels on your new TV.  Since you live far from the city then you might consider one that has long-range capability in order for your TV to receive the signals. Most of the indoor antennas reach about 70 miles. Any farther then this might require an outdoor type antenna or one that mounts to the inside of a window.

Re: Help with Smart TV options

@SilleeMee  I don't.  I know I am too far because my brother in law is six houses down the street and a tech guru and he couldn't make it happen.  I wish!
