Help with Ipad

Our wireless router died. one is ordered and we are waiting for it to arrive. My husband hogs the desktop computer which has the direct internet connection. I should be able to plug my ipad into the Mac desktop and get internet but it doesn't work. What am I doing wrong?

It doesn't work that way. An iPad is either wireless or 4G.
