Help please with IE8 script running problem

IE8 has been driving me crazy lately. I've resorted to using Chrome most of the time, but I would still like to try and fix the problems I'm having with IE. After looking up info about all of this on the Internet, I thought I'd come here and get advice before messing things up more.

When using IE8, I keep getting the following message:"Stop running this script? A script on this page is causing IE to run slowly. If it continues to run, your computer might become unresponsive." Doesn't matter what website I go to (including Bing or Google), this pops up. If it just happened on one computer, I'd think something might be wrong with the computer itself, but it pops up on both of my computers. (One is Windows XP and the other is Windows 7--both have IE8.) In researching how to fix this, I came across instructions to put checks in the boxes labeled Disable Script Debugging (IE) and Disable Script Debugging (other). Turns out that both boxes are already checked. Not sure what else to do except to use Microsoft's Fixit thing. Any advice would be so appreciated!

Oh, one last bit of info. I don't know if this has anything to do with me getting this script message, but a week ago or so, I was having a different problem with IE. On sites I visit all the time, I started being pestered with the "mixed content" message asking me if I "wanted to view only the webpage content delivered securely." On both computers, I went to Internet Options under the Security tab and checked "Enable" where says "Display Mixed Content" (the "Prompt" box had been checked). Would my doing that have anything to do with the script messages now? Thanks.
