Help! Panasonic Lumix FX 40

I have two computers running Windows 7. I love this camera but I cannot connect it to my computer to download my pictures. I get error messages for USB connections. This has never happened to me before with any other camera. Is there a setting that I am not aware of so that the camera can communicate with the computer. Does the camera have some sort of download-upload mode that I am not selecting.
