@ChynnaBlue@chickenbutt

Perhaps you are right about the settings = updates.

Go to the place in the settings where you opt for them.

At the VERY BOTTOM ( I had to scroll up) it says : Microsoft may download some updates before it lists the updates.

I will check the exact wording again, but this would give Microsoft permission to download. It looks sneaky to me.

Also, what about those zillions of updates that the computer runs through while shutting down?

Euuu... I'd hate to have to ok each and every one of these, but I guess this is what opting out costs?

Re: Help-My Computer is totally different this morning

I have nothing on our computer, or any other "internet capable", devices set to "auto-update". I want to give the ok before anything upgrades on all of our devices. I suggest everyone do the same even if you are a bit technologically challenged, you can always ask someone with more experience what they would do.

Hey Loves!  YIKES - I've never had that happen, so I don't know about that.  Did you have your settings for it to just go ahead and download/install ALL updates?

I've had my Win Update settings to where I have it let me know and I do the installing, on what I choose, for so many years I don't remember how it was before except that I had some problems happen when it was updating itself.

What OS are you using?  The only OS from the last 17 years with which I am unfamiliar is Win10, as I don't have that yet (well, ok there was Win ME - I managed to dodge that bullet. heh).   Maybe they are trying more to force updates on your with Win10 (?).

It does seem like with MS stuff and Apple stuff they want you to have less choices and seem to push more and more stuff on you lately.  Smiley Sad  No likey!

It is my opinion that the only programs one should have set to automatically update are the anti-virus program and anti-malware program.

Windows Updates should be set so that you are made aware of updates, but YOU choose which ones to install.   I know I've said this a million times here, but I really wish people would listen.  Or, hey, you don't know me - that's fine - then ask somebody whose word you trust, and is knowledgeable on the subject, and THEN take the same advice you'll be given.

It's just frustrating to see people not know anything about their computer and not be willing to learn how to maintain it properly.

Ok, sorry - rant over.

OK, I was not aware the updates could and should be set differently and I certainly never thought they could replace MY WHOLE OPERATING SYSTEM WITH A NEW ONE, without my knowlege or permission.

This has never happened to me in my many, many, many years of having a computer. No one I know has had this happen to them and I don't frequent this forum that often, but thought I could come here with this issue without gettting jumped on, geeesh.

I do know something about computers, it is not that I'm not willing to listen to learn how to "maintain it properly".   The first part of your reply is appreciated, the last part is not.

When you choose to download manually, you also get a review panel that shows you what the updates are and you can choose which ones you want to install and which ones you want to skip. I usually install all of them, but I keep an eye out for large updates that I know might take a long time or might cause problems with my other software. I can either research those more or come back and do them another time if I need to shut my computer down and go somewhere with it.

If you update weekly, you usually won't have zillions of updates happening at once. That generally happens when someone does NOT update on a regular basis, so they accumulate over months... or years.

I don't see where it says "Windows 10" anywhere, but how could they do this without my permission???  It did say a new download was done when I tried to open it this morning.

@HerRoyaLioness

Go to the start button (hopefully it is still in the lower left of the tray at the bottom of the screen.)

In the search box, type "Operating System"

The screen that comes up shows you the name of the operating system.  try this and I will check back here in a few minutes will you tell me if you were successful?

Stupid Windows doing this.

Sorry, I had to leave for a while.  Thank you for your responses.

I have a little windows icon on the lower left and a search bar comes up, but when I put in Operating Systems, it brings up over 500 million choices!

Someone on here said their Windows 10 was not much different, well I can assure you mine is very very different and I haven't had any time to play around with it yet, but I have been reading through the posts and am getting a little more educated and have some options.  At least I know what happened!

Norton has started sending messages also -  this is getting messy.

@chickenbutt

WIN 7 was set to automatically install updates (on shut-down). That's how it was set up at school. But then, the OS was not so outdated as now.

i

I am satisfied with WIN 7. DH has WIN 8 and he is OK with that.
