@Gokat - thanks to you,  a royal decree has been issued:

"Hark!  There is renewed determination in the Computer Kingdom"

How long it will last I know not, hoping until the end of the day..... until then, I am sharpening my sword.  Smiley Happy

cb - you were the smart one and didn't let Win 10 get you!

Thank you for your well wishes on my retirement - I'm loving it - it was a long journey to get here and I appreciate every minute of it.

I think my computer may be working a bit better today, you guys are the best for helping me out!

Maybe I just lucked out!  It sounds like it really snuck up on many people.  I was fortunate to see a lot of stuff about this months ago and, being the paranoid neurotic I am sometimes, I really had my ears open.  Smiley Happy

It must be great to retire and, hopefully, be able to reap the rewards of all those decades of work.  I didn't quite make it there.  I stopped my career at about 40 - because it was just killing me.  It was a horrible company and I had to get out in the name of survival.

Then I worked for 10 years running two small local companies, just making enough to live ok.  Then I ended up starting to have problems that precluded me from continuing so I haven't worked now for about 11 years as I continue to have challenges.  My husband works hard to support us, and I'm grateful for that.  Smiley Happy   I couldn't support myself anymore.

The unfortunate thing is that I just had a very small retirement fund and when I turned 60 I was offered the option to convert it to my IRA so I did that.  Hopefully, it will be more significant in that form than the small amount I would get each month if I left it there.

It is my opinion that the only programs one should have set to automatically update are the anti-virus program and anti-malware program.

Windows Updates should be set so that you are made aware of updates, but YOU choose which ones to install.   I know I've said this a million times here, but I really wish people would listen.  Or, hey, you don't know me - that's fine - then ask somebody whose word you trust, and is knowledgeable on the subject, and THEN take the same advice you'll be given.

It's just frustrating to see people not know anything about their computer and not be willing to learn how to maintain it properly.

Ok, sorry - rant over.

That's what my PC Guy also said to do!   I had been letting Windows automatically download.  I changed the setting to be able to choose too. I check for updates often, so I wouldn't miss any.   The other way, it can download overnight.  He said Microsoft had just recently added one that looks like a more required type download.   He said they are getting very sneaky about how they try to get you to download the Windows 10.

My computer automatically installed Windows 10 the other night.  I think I had receivd a warning and ignored it.  I was really afraid of upgrading, but I don't find it that different from Windows 7.  Sure, there's Cortana and Edge and I haven't used them yet (and may never use them) but everything I do use is still there.  My bookmarks are the same, my desktop is the same (with a few new icons along the bottom of the screen) and I'm not finding anything that hard.  I can't imagine going back at this point.

I've heard that it does cause some problems once installed.  Hopefully, yours won't.   Windows 10 works better on new computers than through a download to an older PC or laptop.   I may not mind Win 10, but I want it when I want it, not when they force it on me.

Did your guy put GWX Control Panel on your pc to block the install of Windows 10, @Frosted Cake?

MS is getting more aggressive.  They've sent through the Upgrade here a couple of times in the last week or so.  Luckily, GWX does its stuff and heads it off at the pass for me.Woman Wink

I've already been through the mess Windows 10 can create with an existing Windows 7 configuration, and my laptop was only a year old when it happened.  The manual method for catching the Updates can be time-consuming.  I have more than one computer here so I'm glad I don't have to rely on my time/memory to outfox MS.  Hopefully this will go away after July 29th when a price tag is added to Windows 10 standalone versions.  Woman Happy

What I don't get is wouldn't Microsoft rather everyone pay for Windows 10 then get it free?
