I was a victim of I.D. theft. I will never hire a service to shred my documents. I do it myself a little at a time.I admit I'm paranoid. Better safe than sorry!!

Our bank does it free four times a year, NO charge!

Check with your city hall. About two times now, I've noticed there is a place in our town that advertises that. Your yellow pages, if you still get a phone book, may even list them.

Yes there are several companies that do this service. You just have to check online and see what's available in your area. You can even drive to them so as to pay a lesser fee. To me though you cannot put a price tag on privacy/security. The company we used shredded our documents right in front of us.

I would only allow them to shred the papers in front of me. Many charge by the pound.

I was wondering if anyone had ever used a shredding service. Staples will take your papers and sends them to Gold Mountain, which got a Gold Award last year by Top 10 Reviews for shredding services. I am nervous about just walking in and handing them papers that have my sensitive information on them, though. Thanks.
If you are "handing your papers over", I'd be worried also.
If you are putting them in a locked bin, you should be OK
I am employed, I use the shred boxes at work. The boxes are locked and the shred truck comes to the office, the driver removes the canvas bin inside the box & shreds the papers on the truck on site.
Besides the good suggestions here, talk to your local Postal Inspector. They sponser a shred day once a year.

We have independent shipping stores (they do USPS, UPS and FedEx) that will shred 5 pounds for free. They also destroy computer hard drives. All done as you watch. Maybe there are stores in your area that do the same.

I was in a local UPS office recently and noticed a locked shredding container near the door. I assumed it was for customer's use, but I have no idea the cost. It's another possible choice for you to check on.

i would never let them haul the papers away. i always make sure they did it right at the storage area and at our home.
