I am considering the HP Touchscreen all in one type computer that is the special value on HSN today.  My only hesitation is I have heard some are not fans of these "all in one" type units because when something goes wrong it takes out the whole unit.  Anyone have any experience they can share?

A computer is a computer. The only real issue with the all-in-ones is the manufacturers tend to have more issues with heat, so they tend to go smaller on power supplies which can lead to an underpowered computer which may be more likely to crash when pushed. You want to be sure you keep the vents unobstructed on a an all-in-one. You've got the heat from the computer and the display (feel the back of your current monitor) all in one case with minimal fans to dissipate that heat so overheating can be more of an issue, but they've gotten better with it.

I've seen HP desktops with vastly undersized power supplies so this isn't unique to all in ones either. In one case the video card alone in a high end HP refurb offered on Woot.com needed more power than the power supply was rated for. That's why Woot had so many to offer. The computers were crashing frequently and being returned. Pop in a bigger power supply and you'd end up with a really good computer at a bargain price.

If you're the type who doesn't mind opening a traditional desktop and replacing a hard drive or  other component you might be more comfortable with a traditional desktop, but you can generally get to the parts in an all-in-one too if you're so inclined. It can be more challenging, but it's not undoable. If you send your computer out to the shop for any repairs then it doesn't matter.

My experience is with a Dell all-in-one and I am extremely pleased with this type of unit.  I prefer a desktop, but like others always hated the space required for the tower. The next desktop I buy will be another all-in-one.  I don't understand the concern about "taking out the whole unit" if something goes awry.  If you should require service on an all-in-one, it's a lot easier to carry in-- or ship to service provider--  something the size of a monitor as opposed to a tower.

Thank you so much @gardenman and @Trix for your responses!  I wish I was a little more techy.  The good news is it looks like the Q has the same unit (or very close) for $50 bucks less than HSN.  I really appreciate your help!

I would say the best deal is whomever is offering tech support be it for 2-to-4 years or lifetime.  The Premium Tech support from QVC is a telephone hotline you can call for the any question or issue related to your computer.  It doesn't have to be because it's broken. The service was part of my QVC package and it's exceeded my expectations in quality.

DH just bought an all-in-one HP to replace a very old tower type computer.  Read the posts:  good to know about the heat issue and will keep the area unobstructed.

Found the new keyboard uncomfortable to use: totally flat and no indentations for fingertips....kept making typing mistakes.  Too, do not like where the delete key is.  Hard to tell where the comma and period are: too light print and next to each other.

Maybe after lots of use, I will get comfortable with this keyboard.

Can't you use or get another keyboard you like?  You could even use your old keyboard.  My friend has a Mac and when I go to her house I take my windows keyboard with me to use on her Mac.   There are lots of other keyboards out there.  Look at Fry's or Amazon.

If that was the case, no one would buy a notebook/laptop computer.  They are all-in-ones and it doesn't stop people from buying them.  That is such an old outdated argument "forgetaboutit".

This is my second iMac.  Only problem occurred when I had to have the hard drive on my first one replaced under warranty.  Had to take the whole computer (and it isn't light) for repair.  In spite of that incident, I bought a replacement one to upgrade, and love it.
