Lithium Ion battery design is 95% science/engineering and 5% voodoo. Pretty much every company making products using Lithium Ion batteries runs into trouble at some point. Sony had their laptops that tended to catch on fire. Boeing had overheating battteries on a jetliner design. Samsung most recently had to recall billions of dollars worth of products due to bad batteries. Those little batteries hold a lot of power in a very small space and trying to confine a lot of energy in a small space needs everything to be absolutely perfect. Perfection is hard to come by.
Consumers want products that run longer between charges and that encourages manufacturers to cram more and more power into the battery. Very often they try to put in just a tick too much and bad things happen.
If you talk to the engineers and designers they'll typically tell you they don't know why one design works and one fails, but it happens. That's where the voodoo comes in. You can use the same materials and same basic design in two different products. one may work perfectly, the other one may fail spectacularly over time. This has been going on since the first lithium ion batteries reached the market and will likely continue on for some time yet until the science and engineering figures out the parts that now seem like voodoo.
