Gmail question

Tonight for the 1st time in a while I cleared the history on my MacBook Air.  When I logged back into gmail there is a white opaque box that is where my message appear - I dont like it!  I can see the emails but I just don't like that box.

 

I have gone thru all the settings, looked on line for the answer, nothing.  I cleared history again, same thing.  I tried Chrome, gmail looks the same with Chrome and Safari.

 

Anyone have any advice?  Thanks

@Mom2Dogs    Good luck figuring out a problem with gmail.  You'll get no help from Google and the problems can be so weird, nobody ever heard of them.  I had one a year ago and spent hours over a 3 month period trying to resolve it.  It became a hobby.  It somehow eventually resolved itself.

I cleared it yesterday but no box appeared.  Working as usual.  I am sure next time I do it, I will probably see the same box you see.  Much like the QVC site, sometimes it works as usual and sometimes it doesn't.
