Gmail for iPad update issues

Yesterday I updated my iPad Gmail app. Previously, Chrome for iPad was my default browser. Since the update the default has become Safari, which I am not happy about.

I have looked in my iPad settings, my Chrome settings and my Gmail settings and I don't see any default options. I have googled and can't find anything that isn't several years old & that works. I had no issues before the update.

Am I missing something? Halp!

Re: Gmail for iPad update issues

Try the following...

  • Run the Gmail app.
  • Click the little menu icon in the upper left (three parallel stripes).
  • Click the Settings gear icon.
  • Click "Google Apps" near the bottom (you may have to scroll down).
  • Turn "Chrome" on or off at your preference. On means links will go to Chrome; off means they'll go to Safari.

@Mz iMac I had done that, but there is no Chrome icon there. It shows Gmail Youtube, Maps, Docs, Sheets, Slides, Drive, Google+, Google Play and Google Keep. No choice for Chrome - which I'm using to write this post. It's weird!

@Moonchilde,  I don't use the app for Gmail on my iPad/iPhone, I just use the native Mail app.    However, I took a quick look at the reviews of the newest version (v. 5.0.3, updated 11/7) of the app and saw this comment titled "Can't open links in chrome":

"...After the update I'm no longer able to open links in my gmail in the chrome app.   In my settings there is no option to select chrome, but there are options for all of my other google apps...  "   It appears this might be a reported glitch?

Ahhh. Thank you, @dooBdoo. I did wonder. It was functioning perfectly pre-update. I'll keep an eye out and hope it gets fixed 😟

You're welcome, @Moonchilde!   I know how aggravating those new-version bugs can be!    I've never tried the app, since I use the full version of my Gmail on my Mac.    What do you find to be the benefits of the app on the iPad?   I might give it a try.    Thanks!

Re: Gmail for iPad update issues

@dooBdoo I have three active email addys and I like that the app lets me quickly go back and forth between them without navigating a website and re-signing in.

It's funny, because this update was hailed as "finally Gmail for iPad app is as good as the Android app" with all bells & whistles. As soon as I opened it after downloading I disliked it. For one thing all the accents are bright red :-( I will get used to it, but I much prefer the older "not as good" version. Go figure!

Yep. And judging by the recent reviews, quite a few users think the update sux 😟 I can only hope they don't take forever to fix it. Sigh...
