Garmin Map Update Question

I had a notice that new maps were available. (I had done a previous update about 3 months ago). After 5 hours today, it's still saying "updating device software". Is that normal? I stopped it and restarted it to see if things move a bit more speedily. I don't recall it taking that long for the previous update. Any thoughts or suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks!
