I have Nexus 7. This tablet is being replaced by the Nexus 9. It is being made by HTC for Google. http://www.androidcentral.com/nexus-9

An iPad Mini w. Retina display will be around $200 by the holidays, and should do the job. OP doesn't need the newest gen. of iPad, and the secondary markets will be looking to move out the older ones.

Kindle Fire HDX 7"". I'm really surprised at how fast and responsive it is. I've been watching live TV (my cable company has an app) and streaming instant videos on it without buffering delays.

Like other things the bigger the better. Get the largest screen you can afford. Your eyes will thank you.

We love our iPads. I would suggest checking out the refurbished ones on www.apple.com.
