Is there a way to delete a message I sent before they read it?

Do you mean a private message or on Facebook so everyone can read.  Yes, you can delete if you do it immediately after posting.

Once you hit the enter button and send the message you can't delete it on their end only on your own. Even when you go to the delete conversation it will still show up on their end just not on yours. Now you can delete a comment you make on a post and if you are fast enough after you have posted it they might not see that but in a message no you can't.

Can I unsend a message once it has been sent?

No, sent messages can't be unsent or removed from the recipient's inbox. Depending on the persons's notification settings, they may also receive your message as an email notification.

It's a permanent record once sent.

you can delete it  but no garantee they have not seen it.  on a pc theyrer is a delete option or edit on the top right to the comment. On your phone I think you click on it and the edit/delete shows up i think
