@Gokat wrote:I hope you read my opening statement on this thread, @2blonde. I empathize fully with what you're going through with MS and Win 10. The reason I started this thread was to share the GWX Control Panel program...a godsend here for blocking all the Win10 Update/Install files automatically so that we no longer have to deal with them. Many have installed the program now and are reaping the benefits.
MS will continue to aggressively pursue the install of Win 10 ,with or without permission, via the Update process. Your experience with settings changing is happening, especially for those who shut their computers down nightly. It's an attempt to force the install. The GWX Control Panel program handles that as well.
Please give some thought to using the program. It's been tested, is free, and will give you some peace of mind with regard to fending off the Win 10 install until YOU choose it.

@Gokat Yes, I may install the GWX program, but I was thinking that once Win 10 is no longer free they will stop forcing it on people, right? Isn't the end of the free period coming soon?

I hope I'm wrong, but I wouldn't put it past them, at this point, to keep trying to push it.

July 29th is the day, @2blonde . Hopefully, we're right in that assumption so you can just uninstall GWX when it's no longer needed. MS is amping up their approach already as you can see by all the posting going on re: the "surprise". I don't know about you, but I have more to do than babysit my computer, and that was seeming to be the case since the Win 10 free "option" became available. I have more than one computer here so multiplied.
I'm all about options here, so just wanted everyone to know that they have more than one.![]()

Gokat,
Thank you for posting this information about GWX Control Panel. I'm really pretty computer challenged, and I'm not looking forward to having to learn a new system, so I appreciate being able to postpone installing Windows 10 until hopefully they get the kinks out.
When I googled "GWX Control Panel", several places from which I could download it, came up. A few of the options I saw were MajorGeeks.com, Softpedia.com and Techspot.com.
I'm not familiar with any of the above sites, and I would feel better if I used a place that was referred to me. Could you please tell me which site you used to download it?
Thank you

I sure can, @CaliKat . The site from which GWX Control Panel originates is Ultimate Outsider. It's the one I used and recommend. I'll edit my original post to reflect that as it's coming up fairly often. ![]()
Use the installer when you download. There is a User Guide once the program is installed (lower right of GWX screen, in case you have any questions.)
Once you've downloaded and installed GWX you should run a cleaner. I suggest CC Cleaner (freebie) that can be downloaded, if you don't already use it. Do a full scan and also run the Registry Cleaner within the program. MS leaves behind some files that you don't need/want. Once that's done don't be surprised if your computer runs noticeably faster.

Thank you so much for this information. I know this will probably seem like a stupid question.......
I googled GWX Control Panel again and at the top of the list I saw "Ultimate Outsider". When I click on Ultimate Outsider I see the GWX Control Panel option. I can click directly on to GWX Control Panel OR to the right of it it says "Version, Date, Platform", and then under that it says Download Installer OR Download Stand Alone. Are you saying instead of clicking on GWX Control Panel to download it, I should click on "Download Installer"?

Yes, click in "Download Installer" on the right and follow the directions. ![]()

Thank you so much for this information! I hid the Windows 10 Update several times, but this morning it reappeared and the steps I took to hide it in the past no longer worked.
I downloaded GWX Control Panel, installed it, and the Update went away.
From all I have read about Win 10, there are serious privacy issues which make me reluctant to install or use it. Now I don't need to worry about having it forced onto my computer.
