Experience with Square Trade?

I purchased a scanner wand with a Square Trade warranty (extra $) and am wondering if anyone has had any experience with these two things. I like the idea of the wand but purchased two of them in prior years that do not work. This year I bought another one with the warrnty. I am wondering if I should keep it or send it back before Jan 31st. Any thoughts will be appreciated.
