I just saw the 2nd generation of theEcho Dot is only $49.99. I paid $89.99 for mine in March. GGGRrrrrrrrr! They now come in black or white.
It is a pre-order for October 20th I think it said.

Neat! I was tempted to get one and didn't, now I might. I also saw they have a new Fire tablet coming out with Alexa built in.

@gardenman I really like my Dot in the bedroom but it makes me mad that I paid $40 more! They must not have went over at that price (I'm guessing).

@mima I don't know if you can answer this or not, but if I got one for my bedroom I'd put it near my computer. Can you power it off a USB port? I know they use a micro USB connection to get power from the adapter to the Dot, but where I'm possibly putting one it would be more convenient to power it off a USB port on my computer. I have more spare USB ports than electrical outlets.

@gardenman Yes you can connect it to your computer for power. I just tried it and it works fine!

@mima Excellent! I'll probably pick one up. Thanks!

I have looked around and I am still confused. What exactly is the difference between the actual Echo and the Dot? Is it just that it's smaller? I can't really find a good answer to that anywhere.

@Laura14 The Dot and the Echo do the exact same things. The Dot does not have to have an Echo to funcion. It is a stand alone product.
The main difference is the Dot and the Echo is the sound quality. The Dot is not near as loud compared to the Echo. The Echo has a booming deep loud speaker for its size. The Dot is more like listening to your alarm clock as far as sound and volume, but still plenty loud to listen to the news or music across the room. It is also plenty loud to use as an alarm clock.
You can connect the Dot to your own speakers to make it sound better/louder if desired.
The only functioning difference I've found (other that sound quality) is that when I speak to my Echo, it makes a slight sound to let me know she is listening plus she lights up. When I speak the the dot, she doesn't make any sound, she just lights up with the blue ring around the top.
I do not have her attached to any additional speakers in my bedroom and it is fine for me.
Hope that helps.

One more bit of info. If I set an alarm on my Echo, only the Echo goes off in the kitchen and not the dot in the bedroom. You also can't connect them to play the same song at the same time in each room. At least I don't think you can. They don't sync that way.
But they are connected on the app. So if I add bread on my shopping list in the kitchen and I add shampoo in the bedroom, those items go on the same list on my app.

@mima Got it. So the only difference is the sound quality. Otherwise, pretty much same type of device. That's what I was reading but I thought there must be more for such a price difference. I really appreciate it! I've had my eye on the Echo for a while but now I think the Dot may be all I need.
