EXPERIENCE WITH ACER WARRANTIES?

I have been advised by a local Acer repair tech that my hard drive is defective on my 9-month old Aspire and no files can be retrieved from it. I have contacted Acer Support and, what it seems to boil down to, they want me to fix it myself, even though it's under warranty. Helloooooo! I can't repair it myself -- neither can Acer -- it needs to be replaced. Has anyone else met with this resistance from Acer?
