Dragon voice recognization software users

I have it installed on my laptop, I purchased a microphone headset as I was told the one the comes with is not good. I purchased on the the 'jacks' not the USB port , I think this was a mistake. I have regular sound too low errors despite every adjustment the computers sound controls. Will the USB port make a difference?
