I know the new laptops come with a 1-month subscription to Microsoft 365, but then you either have to subscribe every year or pay big bucks to buy a copy. If someone sends me a power point email or word document, and I my 365 subscription runs out, do I still have the ability to read other email containing power point or word....something like Notebook?

No, you won't be able to open/read documents. I thought I had installed micro soft office on my newer computer, but couldn't open documents in emails. I figured it out and installed it.

Apache OpenOffice is a free alternative to MS Office. It has Impress which can open PowerPoint.

Libre Office is also a free office suite.

Microsoft offers free viewers for Word and Powerpoint. You can only view the documents using the viewers, you can not create/edit documents.
