DLP/LCD/LED inPut help tv just died

Hi and thanks in advance for any input or help. Our 5-6 year old 46" Samsung DLP tv just died, it has been making a buzzing sound off and on the past week when turned on, last night the buzzing would not stop when we tried turning the TV off and on 4 times with no result, still buzzing today so can't use it.
Would not pay hundreds to fix something on an older set, not to mention have no idea whom to call, we can't carry it down to bring it in anywhere to be checked. We need info from people whom might be able to offer suggestions, before we hit brick and mortar stores to look.
Sounds to me like LED tvs are basically LCD's but cheaper due to the lighting? And give better picture?
We want a TV that's basic, we are not into 3d picture, don't watch sports, We do like nature and series programs, we do have HD connection but think everyone does now, and want a good picture .
We are thinking Samsung or Vizio, although it looked like Vizio stopped making LED's and leaning toward them rather then spending an extra $900 or more. Know to ask about contrast ratio and higher numbers better, and if we can see digital pictures on a few tvs side by side we will, is there anything else I should know to ask?
Thinking to look at Costco and Best Buy local, as it's main TV need it yesterday tho know obviously that's not an option. We would also need it delivered and the old set taken away as we would not be able to do either, then could have Time Warner help with hookup. Just had a fellow from there here to see if it was cable issue though I did not think it was, he gave input on what to look for and ask, as he said has been looking, then I have done quick look around online before coming to post.
On iPad now, hoping this won't be a single run on paragraph as tried inserting HTML to prevent that. Feeling very overwhelmed trying to figure stuff out with no one to look for help. Mom watches tv a lot, want something with long bulb life, I watch some recorded things.will print up thread on regular pc before looking. Edited to remove typos and fix so it wasn't one single paragraph that's hard to read.
