@qvcaddition How much is your bill over what your budget will allow...... ? Maybe would see if I could cut some other expenditures out first....things that you spend money on that really are not necessary. You will be surprised at what you can cut back on....that is what I would do.
I only say this as I will never cut the cable cord as I love my cable

I have saved on water bill, by using shower and dish washing water and carrying pans of water to yard to water.
I have saved on PGE by using flameless candles in every room and only using TV at night for lighting. Both bills went down on average of 10.00. Now they are raising water bill again. I only buy what I have to have and not want. Including groceries. Cut out the dog's grooming and do it myself. Including her nails.
I don't travel far, just to stores around town. I do my own gardening and housework, always have. Lucky, I am a strong 86. I have learned to cut back on so much, but my income is very low, except this Jan when SS gives us an increase. Believe me, I have cut to bare essentials, but when they keep raising prices, nothing more I can do.
I really don't watch much TV and paying for sports channel 30.00, they they won't take off. I don't watch sports and have a; the hispanic channels, I don't watch. Maybe I will, so I can learn how to speak the language.
Do you know how hard it is to carry buckets of water to water a big yard at 86, but I'm doing it. Haven't used a hose in awhile.
The only thing I can cut is cable, but won't until I see if I get the 30.00 internet credit from the gov. as comcast has advertised.
Won't put my income on here, but below poverty level.
My saving went on a 19,000 roof and my electric grid box being old broke down. Two months ago, my car broke down, new radiator. O believe, I have learned to really conserve.
Also, have been going to food banks, really helps.
I really learned how to cut way back. Nothing left to cut back. My dog's food keeps going up each month, but I will not give her crappy food, then you have the Vets bill.
I have a lot of help through some programs, but will not go on Med i cal or food stamps. I qualify, but will not do it. Didn't do it as a single mother, I worked, and won't do it now.
Thanks for the suggestion.

@qvcaddition I'm just here to say that after I read your age and everything you are doing for yourself, you are to be commended! My mom passed away last year at 93, but when she was your age, while she could physically do what you are doing, she could not use a smartphone or tablet, really didn't understand the internet, and certainly wouldn't have known how to post on a forum. And then for you to call and get some things done on your cable when your son was little to no help? Good for you!!!!! I hope I am as good mentally and physically when I am your age. I hope you have a blessed day!

If your income is below the poverty level, sign up for reduced costs for services. Many companies have programs to help people with very low incomes. If you aren't sure how, ask a computer savvy friend to help. If you qualify, don't let pride get in your way of getting assistance you need.

Thank you and I hope you are also blessed.. Keep learning taking in knowledge. I was Valedictorian at age 72 and received a scholarship. My husband died, I was alone, so Iwent to college. I mention this to tell you my speech was, "No Age Limit". You can learn if you put your mind to it.
You have to know the computer, or electronics, It,s the way of the future.
I think I am physically strong because, I have been exercising for 64+ years. Before health clubs for women. At least that,s what the DR. tells me.
The mind also has to be exercised..
I couldn't get my elderly friends to use the computer or a smart phone. They were afraid. I have always love to learn new things. I am also stubborn. I won't take no for an answer if I think I can get a better answer. I'm surprise my son's are not this way.
Women in my era were taught to be good little girls. We were homemakers and if something went wrong , we turned to our husbands to fix it. Nothing wrong with that, but women or men need to know how to take care of themselves if one or the other is gone.
When my husband fixed something, I would ask him show me.
I only called my son to go, because be works for the company in Management, but he took the kid,s answer, I couldn't.
Thank you for your kind words. Never stop learning new things.
I am glad your Mother was with you until 93. She was strong.

Thank you for suggestions. I am pretty computer savey and am on a few places that have helped with the low income.
Like I mentioned on one post here, the cable company will reduce your internet by 30.00 if you qualify for the fcc.gov offer. I filled out the application online, but could not upload my pictures to send my income.my computer would not do it, maybe because it's a Chrome, so i called them, got my ID #, wrote a cover letter and mailed copies of my income. It's below their income level, and I am on Cal. Lifeline for my phone, so I should pass the requirement.
Thank you for your suggestions.

I found how to retrieve deleted emails. I was looking for the conformation appt. notification that comcast sent me and then told me I didn't have an appt.
I saw 4bars next to my trash, so I clicked on it, and it had all my deleted email. I was able to retrieve the notification.
I just learn on the computer, by clicking or googling.
I think if you don't want google to get info on you, go to Duck duck go. I have not tried that yet. I have to make sure of that first. I was happy to discover how to retrieve deleted emails.

An update on my research. The cable companies have a plan that if your income below a certain level, you can applied for a 30.00 month discount on you internet.
It took me two weeks to do everything with the back and forth on the appl. talking to different people by phone about plan, and everyone said something different.
I stuck with it, sent them income, and all the necessary stuff.
I was approved and boy did i earn it m by working so hard on it and not giving up. They appoved 30.00 off my internet as long as the plan last.

@PickyPicky3 wrote:@qvcaddition The most important thing is to remember there's no rush. This week you should find out what internet sources are available. It may be just Comcast, or there may be more. Your library should be able to help you.
Then you should explore what is available with an antenna. You might be surprised, depending upon where you live.
Assuming your TV is a smart TV, you probably already know what it can do for you just using the internet. If not, check it out this week.
Once you're up to speed with what you've got for free, you'll know what you're missing and can start to explore services.
No rush. It's kind of like shopping for health insurance.
I just posted what I found and applied for the discount on income, was approved and am receiving 30.00 off internet on this gov. plan through the cable comp. Got all the emails telling me about approval and discount. I worked hard for two weeks on this appl. My son that works for cable, could not believe what I went through.
In this case he could not help me.
It pays to be diligent and not give up.
