Copyright violation - sheet music?

Did I just hear the guy selling the HP printer say that you could print out sheet music?

If so .... that may be a violation of copyright law.

"Copyright laws protect composers and music publisher's rights; it is a violation of copyright law to reproduce sheet music without permission from the copyright holder."

Copyright means you can't claim the music as YOUR OWN composition.

I think you both should check copyright law.

MIght not be that simple.  If you're printing off sheet music that's for sale, you might be depriving the composer or owner of royalty fees.

Not much different to making a pirate copy of a dvd.  JMO, I have no idea what the fine legal line is.

Re: Copyright violation - sheet music?

I've spent the weekend learning new music from copies which I bought and printed out using a site called Musicnotes.

I buy the music from the website, print them out on my computer, put them in clear plastic sheet protectors, and place the sheets in a 3 ring binder which makes reading and turning the pages very convenient.

I use other sites as well. My favorite is directly from the composer who offers his music to download at no charge.

My newest favorite piece is a wedding version of Ed Sheeran's "Perfect" that features Pachelbel's "Canon." The artist/arranger who put these two together did an amazing job. Heart

Re: Copyright violation - sheet music?

There are many sites on the internet where you can print out sheet music.

Some is free and you can purchase many, many types for a nominal fee.

I sang in a chorus and we got all of our music off the net, legally!

Many Universities have scanned old music (copyright expired) and you can download it for free.

I don't think sheet music, the way I remember buying it, even exists today.  Everything is digital.

I still find sheet music for sale at The Guitar Center.  I'm sure there are other B&M stores too.

Re: Copyright violation - sheet music?

I am a musician and sort of know a bit about this. You can copy it IF you have purchased it and are waiting for it to arrive. Once it arrives, you are to rip up the copied music and trash it. As a musician who also composes a bit, I am very careful about this.
