My computer is stuck in hibernation mode, and I can't get out of it. I have tried shutting it down with the power button, but it comes right back in that mode. Any suggestions? Btw, I didn't put it in that mode. I always shut it down at night. TIA

Did you try unplugging it from the wall? When you do that you can power-up normally. Works for me.

If it is a laptop do a "hard reset" by taking the battery out for about 5 or 10 min. Then put it back in and turn back on. If it is a desktop unplugg for the same amount of time. Have you tried Ctl, alt, delete to bring up task manager and closing the programs?

Sometimes this works for me. As soon as it begins rebooting tap F8 over and over to bring up a boot menu. Open in safe mode. It should check for and repair problems.

Thank you for all your suggestions. I went grocery shopping, came back and read your posts and turned on the laptop. To my surprise, it fixed itself! That's what I was hoping for but am very happy to have some ideas of what to do if this happens again. Thanks again, everyone. I know I can always count on this forum to help out.

Since it is a laptop, that wouldn't work, but thanks for the suggestion.

ITA. This post should be the one marked for Best Answer.

I mistakenly hit best answer, not being familiar with this function. Obviously, unplugging would not be the best answer in my case. Now I know what will happen when I click on it and will do better next time.

Strange how it went into hibernation mode and then after a few hours it went back to the orginal mode you had it in. Glad this issue solved itself for you.

This may or may not be helpful to some, but when I got my first laptop I found that the 'hibernate' and 'sleep'modes were problematic so I started disabling both, as one of the first things I do when I get a new one.
I guess I don't see the need for those two modes because laptops are not meant to be kept on all the time, so it's good that you turn it off when you're finished at the end of your computing day.
If I'm back and forth between the computer and doing other stuff, I find that the screensaver is perfectly adequate.
