OMG. Just spilt some coffee on my laptop.. Brought it over to geeksquad to see if they could fix it, and they were so RUDE! Took forever in Bestbuy, and ended up charging me without even fixing anything!

Anyone else have nightmare stories with computer repair?

Re: Computer repair nightmares?

@agneslynn

You may want to try "UBreakIFix" for repairs to cellphones, iPads, etc.   Verizon gave me a $10 coupon to use on my laptop in December.  Before I got to use it though, I found a 25 or 50% coupon on line which I used instead.

Check their hours: I would call first so you could get in and wait while they fixed it.  The young fellows were pleasant and accommodating.

Re: Computer repair nightmares?

@agneslynn  FWIW........

Not a nightmare.  They charged you for labor which they had every right to do.  If you paid w/a cc you can dispute the charges w/your cc company if you believe you were overcharged for labor.

As for them not fixing anything, unless you took your laptop to the Geek Squad after a "liquid" spill especially coffee 1-5 MINUTES AFTER the spill, your laptop is not repairable.  Even if it was repairable, liquid spills are more expensive to repair than your laptop.

NOTE:  Invest in a keyboard cover to protect against spills, crumbs, dirt, etc from damage.

How were they rude?

You said they didn't fix anything.  What did they tell you?

Just like other repair services....furnace, for example, charges for a service call whether they can fix the problem or not.

Evidently, they couldn't fix it, but they knew enough about computers to be able to tell you that.  You paid Best Buy for labor and tech expertise.

Re: Computer repair nightmares?

I have spilt coffee on mine a few times, luckily it caused not much harm, I have a bad habit after dinner of getting coffee and falling asleep...I know...dumb!  The mouse pad on the laptop stopped working so I have to use an external mouse but aside from that no issue, this laptop was 200 so I wouldnt pay someone to try to fix it though.  I think my next laptop I will invest in a keyboard cover since I am a clutz.

Re: Computer repair nightmares?

I have had a Geek Squad "contract" for service and computer malfunctions for years. The service is horrible lately, they are very rude and have NO customer service skills at all! I called for service a few weeks ago and they asked me for my phone number I have it to her and she came back a few min later and sd why do you have 3 service accts here? I sd I have no idea I didn't set them up. The girl was so rude as she went on to tell me that the item I had purchased under 4 months ago and is under warranty was not covered because I had the separate accts....I was shocked. I again told her I only have 1 acct and have had service accts for several years and that however it was set up was by them. I asked to speak to a mgr and she hung up on me. I am so frustrated with them that I will never, ever purchase anything from Best Buy and forget their on line repairs for your computer...They don't speak English when they put you through to a tech and it is impossible to relay to them what you need....Major fail! When I first git them it was great and the service has gone downhill since......

Re: Computer repair nightmares?

I really feel that I have to stick up for the Geek Squad here!  I am not in ANY way connected to Best Buy, Geek Squad, or any of their employees so this is an honest opinion!

I have been a Geek Squad service member  for nearly 4 years now, and because I am

1) old and somewhat technology intimidated

and...

2) A true Gemini who has absolutely NO PATIENCE so I would tend to throw things

out the window if they give me a hard time...

I rely on these guys to help me with my occasional set-up, re-boot, and any other issues that would surely have me wide eyed and ripping my hair out!

When I  moved last year it took one call to have 2 (TWO!!) very polite and respectful young fellows come to my home and get my smart TV, desktop, iPhone, and Alexa all

hooked up and interacting with each other.  I have had problems getting some things operational after some outages and a quick phone call got me in touch with super friendly and knowledgeable and helpful people who both spoke english perfectly and when informed that they needed to understand my utter lack of tech proficiency were super patient.

I am sorry your experiences haven't been similar to mine, but maybe it could just be a problem at your location.  I am in suburban Boston and I am a Geek devotee!

Your computer is most likely unfixable.  Any liquid will "fry" the electronics.  Even if it was, it would cost more than it's worth.  Time to shop for a new machine.

Re: Computer repair nightmares?

Nothing is truly "unfixable." It comes down to cost versus value more than anything. If the laptop is only worth $200 and it costs $500 to fix it then it's not worth the effort to fix it. Could it be fixed? Absolutely! Could that specific shop fix it? Maybe not if they don't have hot-air stations and experienced techs and access to repair parts. Some companies (I'm looking at you Apple) don't make spare parts available. Shops specializing in Apple repairs will buy sacrificial Apple laptops/devices to harvest parts from to repair a customer's computers.

Re: Computer repair nightmares?

What an awful experience, @agneslynn . Spilling coffee on my laptop has always been a  worry for me.  I have Geek Squad and they've been helpful.  I hope you're able to get the issue resolved.
