Computer Processor Help!!

Can someone please help me sort out all the different processors offered?? Is the Intel I3 ok? Is the AMD dual core better? I"m so confused I don't know WHAT to do. I can't afford an 800 laptop, but would like one that RUNS and doesnt die in 4 months....... I"m guessing the processor speed is what to look for, but I can't figure out which is which, anyone willing to help out??
