Compatible On Network?

Desktop upstairs is Windows XP. Dell laptop being used downstairs is XP. Can the laptop be replaced with Windows 7 and still be on the network or do they have to be the same. I use the laptop as stationary in the dining room mostly plugged into electrical outlet.
