Can an electronic savoy person please help with a garmin problem?

I have been trying since the end of June to register my TSV Garmin Nuvi 40LM and I can not get past the plug in USB cable point. I have done the communication software download and keep trying and it does nothing. I cannot use my mouse/curser once I plug the USB cable in. I do notice that the cable that came with my Garmin is just a straight cable and that part on installation - what does the USB cable look like, looks different than the one that I have, it has a tube-like looking thing in the center of the cable, could this be my problem? I am at my wits end with this. I tried to get on-line tech support and it said it would cost $30 if they answered my question, so I did not do that. Please Help Me anyone!!!!{#emotions_dlg.crying}
