CONNECTING MY NEW HDTV

i can see you all scratching your heads already.... i want to temporarily hook up my new hdtv to a box not used to receive hd. why??? well it's a long story..but my bil placed my cable box for my kitchen tv in a very weird place. it's almost impossible to get to. he's moving to my town in 6 months and will be happy to exchange boxes for me. in the meantime my old tv has konked and with all the great sales on hdtvs, i bought a new hd replacement. hence... i would like to know if i can connect it to my old box? i know i won't receive the hd stations, but i don't care for 6 months. it would be better than viewing in black/white which is all my old tv is giving me! thanks so much. i hope someone can advise me.
