Black Screen

I need some help. My laptop, which is 3 years old, will not boot up, I get only a black screen when it's turned on. Does this mean it's dead or fixable at a decent cost? I tried putting in the recovery disks, but still nothing. I don't have any saved files on it, I only use it periodically and use electrical power, never the battery. I expected it to last longer than 3 years. I'd appreciate any comments.
