Recently I have been getting the message Running out of Application Memory...I did go online to find out what it exactly meant and what to do.

I cleared out/trashed all emails, downloads, emptied trash and have never downloaded an app.  I do have some photos in PHOTOS but not really a lot.

I use Safari and Chrome but rarely have both running at the same time unless I want to listen to the news while using the laptop...but I still continue to get the message.

Before I call Apple or make an appointment with the Genius Bar, does anyone have tips or recommendations?

I am using Macbook Air, Big Sur 11.1 and I have 82.3 gb of available storage out of 121.12.   Thanks

@Mom2Dogs

Have you cleared your cache and deleted cookies?

Re: Application Memory question

Yes, do check with Apple Tech Support re:  'Running out of Application Memory.' It doesn't seem you should be having this issue.

I don't know about your particular message, but I have a brand new MacBook Air, with nothing loaded on it yet except basics, after my elderly MacBook Pro burned itself out.

With some shopping sites and high content push sites like Daily Mail, which is ridiculous, I keep getting messages that I'm visiting a high content site and I may have better computer performance, if I leave the site. It's distracting. Never happened with my Pro.

I searched my message to find folks complaining about this high content site usage alert, in great numbers. It's hard to bypass high content sites anymore, with forced videos and dozens of flashing ads. Will we eventually need super computers to be able to handle simply surfing the web, or shopping?

Re: Application Memory question

@Mom2DogsChrome is your problem more than likely.  It is a known app memory hogger on the Mac OS.  Especially if you keep a lot of Chrome tabs open at the same time.  Find another backup browser.

Make sure you QUIT out of apps.  Closing an app only means that the app is still running in the background even though the window is no longer showing on your desktop.

You can also use the "Force Quit" option.  That window will show you all the apps that are "open."  You can "force quit" directly from the window.

Another option is to check the "Memory" tab of the Activity Monitor app which is located inside the Utilities folder.  This useful app will show you ALL the apps on your computer & which ones are the memory hogs.

After doing any of the above, run Disk Utility's First Aid & restart your computer afterwards.

If you want to continue to use Chrome, once a week run a 3rd party disk maintenance utilitiy app.  Onyx is a good one & it's FREE!

Re: Application Memory question

@Mz iMac Thank you.   I have never run disk utility...I'll give that a try.

I only use Chrome to listen to the news while Safari is running
